First, Katrina. Then, the oil spill. And now, yet again, the beleaguered state of Louisiana seems under the gun. This time, the snowmelt-swollen Mississippi River is escaping its boundaries. The longer this goes on, the more water flows, and there is nowhere else to go but over or through the levees in Louisiana toward the destination for all that water..the Gulf.
Louisiana, the state my husband and I grew up in, and raised our kids in, is no longer our home. (But we still have many friends and family there, not to mention we miss the food--I mean, you never get over that food!) Husband's home town is greatly threatened, and has already begun to flood. It is heartbreaking to see the pictures daily sent to us. Our prayers are constant for those who live and work there.
We have a question though. The Bonnet Carre spillway has already been opened to help divert the river's volume. Now the burning question seems to be whether or not to open the Morganza spillway to avoid flooding in the cities of Baton Rouge and New Orleans. The apparent reason for delaying? It seems that over the years, people have purchased land, built homes and towns in this spillway, even though it is a....SPILLWAY. Now, why would anyone do that? Oh...right...it is Louisiana...probably some politician owned that land..
The citizens along the river are being assured by none other than the Corps of Engineers that the levees are safe. Uh huh. Well, they have street cred, don't they, after that fiasco with the New Orleans levees in 05. Lord, have mercy.
And that, is only one of the reasons we made the move from Louisiana some years ago. Our decision was made the year that we, as Louisiana voters, were required to elect either David Duke (previously KKK grand wizard) or Edwin Edwards (the known crook who had already been governor). That kind of did it for us! Ya live, ya learn...sometimes.
Praying for those in harm's way.
